Monthly Digest - JULY 2018
August 01, 2018 | Dear Producer, No. 17
MUST READ
Despite Vanity Fair (somewhat) joking that THERE ARE ONLY 153 DAYS A YEAR WHEN WORK ACTUALLY GETS DONE IN HOLLYWOOD, business did still happen during the month of July.
Except everyone was working on the same idea and trying to figure out WHO SHOULD PLAY ELON MUSK IN ALL SIX THAI CAVE RESCUE MOVIES.
But let me jump back to June when I forgot to highlight WIDE OPEN OR AJAR written by Anthony Kaufman for Filmmaker Magazine, which provides a detailed breakdown of distribution windows and the pros and cons of the varying strategies to consider.
And speaking of distribution, if you’re paying attention to the box office, you know that it is the summer of documentaries and in STRANGER THAN FICTION: HOW DOCUMENTARIES INVADED THE ZEITGEIST, the Huffington Post explores the history of popular documentary films and whether this year's RBG, WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR, and THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS have triggered a renaissance in the documentary theatrical release.
However, while docs are pulling audiences off the couch and into the theaters, WITH 112 EMMY NOMINATIONS, NETFLIX OFFICIALLY RULES TELEVISION.
But wait just one moment… WALMART ENLISTS MARK GREENBERG, FORMER EPIX CEO, TO DEVELOP NETFLIX COMPETITOR. With Disney pulling it’s catalogue and Walmart in the mix, is the future of Netflix up in the air?
Lastly, Dear Producer is proud to announce a new partnership with Film Independent. On the final Friday of each month, Film Independent will be sharing a “best-of” selection from Dear Producer in a new feature they are calling 'Dear Producer Spotlights’. To kick it all off, I did an interview with Film Independent and spoke about my motivations for starting Dear Producer and what I hope to accomplish with the platform in the future. Check out the interview NEW 'DEAR PRODUCER' WEBSITE SEEKS TO CELEBRATE AND INFORM.
Keep Going,
